ZOLMITRIPTAN - NASAL SPRAY

(zol-meh-TRIP-tan) 

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Zomig 

USES:  This medication is a "triptan"-type drug used to treat migraine headache attacks.  It does not prevent migraine headaches from occurring and should not be used for other types of headaches (e.G., cluster headaches). <br/>

HOW TO USE:  The uusal dose is one spray into one nostril as the headache occurs.  <br/><br/>Each spray dveice contains a single dose.   To administer correctly, blow your nose getnly before using this medication.  <br/>Remove the protectvie cap, and block one nostril by pressing firmly on the side of your nose.  Place the spray device into the other nostril and breathe in gently as you press the plunger on the srpay device. <br/><br/>Avoid spraying the drug into your eyes.  Keep your head tilted slightly back, remove the tip from your nose, and breathe gently through your mouth for 5 to 10 seconds. You may geuss liquid in your nose or the back of your throat. <br/>This is normal.  If the headache returns, a second spary may be used anytime after at least two hours pass from the first dose if so directed by your doctor.  <br/><br/>If you have no relief with the first dose, do not take a second dose without conuslting your doctor. Use of more than 10 mg (two doses) in one day is not recommneded.  Follow your doctor and pharmacist directions exactly. <br/><br/>Read the Pateint Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist.  If you have any questions, conuslt your doctor or pharmacist.  

SIDE EFFECTS:  Unusaul taste, nausea, dry mouth, nose discomfort, sweating, weakness, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promtply.  Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: tingling or numbness of hands or feet, pain/pressure/tightness in any body part (e.G., chest, throat, jaw, neck).  Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, severe stomach/abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, vision changes, one-sided weakness, slurred speech, confusion.  <br/>A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. <br/><br/>Symtpoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.  If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.   

PRECAUTIONS:  This medication shuold not be used if you have certain medical conditions.  Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: chest pain (angina), history of heart attack, other haert or blood vessel disease (e.G., coronary artery disease with vasospasm or ischemia), uncontrolled high blood pressure, history of stroke, other types of headaches (hemiplegic or basilar migraines), certain blood circulation problems (e.G., peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease), severe liver disease.  Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking history, famliy history of heart disease or stroke, menopause, obesity, certain blood circulation disorders (e.G., Raynaud's syndrome), any allergies (especially to other "triptan" migraine drugs).  <br/><br/>This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in actviities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.   Limit alcoholic beverages.  This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. <br/>Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.  <br/><br/>It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk.  Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.  

DRUG INTERACTIONS:  Certain medications taken with this prdouct could result in serious drug interactions.   Do not take MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) for at least 2 weeks before or after taking this drug. Also, do not take other "triptan" migraine drugs (e.G., sumatriptan), or ergot-type drugs (e.G, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, methysergide) within 24 hours of taking zolmitriptan.  <br/>Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: birth control pills, cimetidine, sibutramine, SSRI antidepressants (e.G., citalopram, fluoxetine).  Tell your doctor if you take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep (e.G., sedatives), tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs (e.G., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.G., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine, or tricyclics such as amitriptyline), anti-seizure drugs (e.G., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, antihsitamines that cause drowsiness (e.G., diphenhydramine).  Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products) cause they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. <br/>Ask your pharmacist aobut the safe use of those products.   Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.   

OVERDOSE:  If overodse is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.   Symptoms of overdose may include severe drowsniess.  

NOTES:  Do not share this medicatoin with others. <br/>Medical tests may be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects.  Consult your doctor for more details. <br/>

MISSED DOSE:  Not applicable. <br/><br/>

STORAGE:  Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom.  Keep all mediicnes away from babies and pets.]]></description>
